Honda Pilot Remote Start Guide (All Model Years)
The Honda Pilot is a comfortable family SUV—no doubt about it. In fact, the comfort begins even before you step into the cabin.
The remote engine start feature lets you start the car and automatically cool or warm the cabin right from your bedroom.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through this feature in detail—which Pilot models come equipped with it, how to use it, and how to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
Availability
The remote engine start feature has been available on the Honda Pilot from the 2016 model year to the present. However, not all Pilots come with a remote engine start feature; to make it easier, I’ve broken them down by model year.
2025 – 2026 Honda Pilot
If you drive the latest Pilot, congratulations—your SUV is definitely equipped with remote engine start.
Honda has been a bit more generous in recent years, equipping its SUVs with a fairly comprehensive set of standard features.
The latest Honda Pilot, including the 2025 and 2026 model years, comes with remote engine start on all trim levels, even the base model.
Another great feature is that, for 2026 models, this function can be controlled through the HondaLink app on your smartphone and is available across all models.
However, for models before 2026, not all trim levels support it; we’ll cover this in more detail later in the section on using remote engine start.
2016 – 2024 Honda Pilot
If you drive a 2016–2024 Honda Pilot, you’ll need to check whether your model is equipped with remote start. All 2016–2024 Honda Pilot trims include remote engine start, except for the base LX model.
Here are the details:
- LX (Unavailable)
- EX (Available)
- EX-L (Available)
- Touring (Available)
- Sport (Available)
- Black Edition (Available)
- TrailSport (Available)
- Elite (Available)
- Special Edition (Available)
How to Use
Okay, so the Honda Pilot you drive has a remote start feature, right?
Well, here’s how to use it.
Using The Key Fob

Starting and stopping your Honda Pilot remotely with the key fob is quite straightforward. However, there are a few important things to keep in mind.
Before you start the car, you’ll want to make sure of the following:
- Your SUV is parked in an open area or a garage with adequate ventilation.
- Starting the car in an enclosed space risks carbon monoxide buildup. Breathing it in can cause fainting and other risks you’d rather not deal with.
- The distance between the key fob and the car is less than 100 feet (30 meters).
These are the steps to start your SUV with the key fob.
- Press the Lock button once; you’ll hear a click or see the car’s lights flash.
- You’ll also see the LED light flash when you press the Lock button. If the LED on the key fob doesn’t flash, the key fob battery is likely dead; check the key fob battery guide for more information.
- Within 5 seconds of pressing the Lock button, press and hold the “circular arrow” for at least 3 seconds.
- If the engine starts successfully, the hazard lights will flash 6 times.
- To start driving, depress the brake pedal and press the engine start/stop button.
Using the HondaLink App
Honda vehicles are equipped with HondaLink. With this app, you can monitor your car’s status and control it remotely, including starting the engine.
Unlike the remote start feature with a key fob, which is available on nearly all trim levels, the remote feature on HondaLink is only available on select trims.
Specifically for the latest model, the 2026 Honda Pilot is compatible across all trim levels. However, for older models, it is only available on certain trims.
So you’ll need to check carefully to see if your Honda Pilot supports the HondaLink remote start feature.
- 2026 Honda Pilot: All trims compatible
- 2025 Honda Pilot: Touring, TrailSport, Touring w/HPD Wheels, Elite, Black Edition
- 2023–2024 Honda Pilot: Touring, Elite
- 2020–2022 Honda Pilot: Touring, Elite, Black Edition
- 2019 Honda Pilot: Touring, Elite
- 2018 and earlier: Not available
If you’re still unsure whether your Pilot supports this feature, check the HondaLink Vehicle Compatibility website. Simply enter your VIN, and the site will confirm compatibility.
It’s important to note that the Remote Engine Start feature on HondaLink isn’t free. Honda offers a three-month trial; if you want to continue using this feature, you’ll need to subscribe to the “Remote” package for $10 per month or $110 per year.
In addition to the remote engine start function, the Remote package also includes additional features such as:
- Security Alarm Alert
- Remote Lock & Unlock
- Find My Car
- Geofence Alert
- Destination by Voice
- Amazon Alexa Skill
- Favorites
- Send to Destination
So, you already know that your Honda Pilot supports the HondaLink remote start feature. Now, let’s see how to use it.
First, you need to connect your smartphone to your car—you only need to do this once at the beginning.
Here’s how.
- Download the HondaLink app to your smartphone.
- Use your phone to scan the VIN barcode, usually located on the driver’s door pillar or on the dashboard near the windshield (see the picture below). You can also enter the VIN manually.
- Ensure the car is turned off and the transmission is in Park (P). Then tap Verify Access.
- Once access is verified, start the vehicle immediately.
- The system will sync, which usually takes about 60 seconds.
Note: To connect your smartphone to your SUV, make sure your cellular signal is stable, especially during the synchronization process.

Once your smartphone is synced with your car, you can now control your SUV using your smartphone.
Here’s how to start your Honda Pilot using your smartphone.
- Open the HondaLink app on your smartphone
- Tap Remote Command and select Start.
- Your car will start, indicated by the hazard lights flashing 6 times.
- To turn it off, simply select Stop.
Is your car not starting when you try to start it using either the key fob or the HondaLink app? Well, let’s go over it in the Troubleshooting section.
Troubleshooting
Sometimes, no matter how reliable a technology is, there are still hiccups—including remote engine start. If your car won’t start with the remote, don’t panic; it might be caused by one of these things:
- If you attempt too often. For example, if you press the circular arrow button and release it before the car starts, then repeat it multiple times, the system may block your request, similar to entering the wrong password repeatedly, which locks you out for a period of time.
- The transmission is not in the P position. This happens quite often—when we’re in a hurry, we sometimes forget to move the transmission lever from N to P.
- Low-key fob battery. Over time, the key fob battery can run down. When the battery is low, the remote function is disrupted. It may still work at close range, but at longer distances, there isn’t enough power to transmit the signal. Check your key fob battery; I’ve discussed this in a complete key fob battery replacement guide.
- You accidentally disabled the remote engine start setting. Try checking Vehicle settings by pressing the Home button on the steering wheel, and scrolling to keyless access setup and turning on the remote start setting.
- 12V battery voltage drop. This rarely happens, but if your SUV’s battery is low, the system will disable some functions to save power.
- The second key is inside the car. This often happens with cars just delivered from the dealer.
- The hood is open. If you previously opened the hood and didn’t close it completely, the remote engine start function will not work. This is important for safety, as it can be dangerous if the engine starts accidentally while you or a mechanic is checking the engine or performing an oil change.
- Engine problems such as low oil pressure or overheated coolant.
Some Important Details About the Honda Pilot Remote Start
Here are a few things you should know about the remote engine start feature on your Pilot:
- After starting with remote engine start, the car will run for 10 seconds and shut off if you don’t drive it. You can restart it the same way.
- If the engine shuts off before 10 minutes have passed, it could be due to several factors, such as an unlocked door with the built-in key, pressing the lever release button, a low 12V battery, or an engine problem.
- The engine will also shut off immediately if you shift the transmission from P to another gear without pressing the brake pedal and the engine start/stop button first.
- The automatic climate system will adjust the cabin temperature to a comfortable level based on the weather. On sunny days, it will turn on the air con and set it to 72 degrees. In winter, it will activate the defroster, defogger, heated door mirrors, heated steering wheel, and heated front seats.
